Temporary shelter

The temporary shelter is a safe haven for women who, due to situations of violence, require immediate protection and do not have a place to take refuge.

Descripción y alcance del servicio

A refuge is a place where a person finds peace, safety, and protection. For us feminists, a temporary refuge is like the beginning of a flight toward freedom. For survivors of violence who are experiencing a dangerous situation, the Casa's refuge is a safe and confidential space that provides shelter, food, and some of the affection they have been seeking throughout their lives.

What's the shelter like inside?

Modesto, with 8 beds that house hundreds and hundreds of women who pass through the offices of the Women's House, has strict physical security measures, access control and a lot of secrecy about the women or girls and adolescents who are temporarily housed there.

Shelter is not just a roof over your head, a bed, or a plate of food; it's the encounter between survivors and professional guides who will accompany them in the actions they autonomously decide upon. A professional guide and advocate will never decide for the survivor; she, and only she, should decide.

The shelter has small common areas, the kitchen where they get to know each other, listen to stories and sometimes laugh at their own stories, they also prepare meals and exchange information, without resorting to revictimization, that is something prohibited in the Women's House.

Why is shelter important?

Because it saves lives immediately, takes women and their children out of the cycle of violence, and provides assistance when the lives of survivors are in danger.

In the shelter, the most important thing is the autonomy of the women; our duty is to respect their decision-making capacity.
