CELEBRATE THE STRUGGLE
Inviting everyone to join together in dreams and wills
Women around the world are striking today, March 8th, International Women's Day, to demand full equality of rights, conditions, and opportunities for women without discrimination of any kind. At the Women's Center, we know that we are heirs to all previous struggles, and that we will never accept injustice or the domination of one person or class over another. That's why we are joining the strike called by women worldwide, launching the campaign "I'm joining, are you?" This is about uniting forces and inviting collective action to prevent and eradicate violence against women and their bodies. We can all change everyday attitudes that undermine women's dignity.
Casa de la Mujer joins in this day with a sisterly embrace; it is no coincidence that it has chosen to launch its campaign in conjunction with all the social and political movements that demand women's rights, against inequalities of all kinds, focusing its actions on the prevention and denunciation of patriarchal, sexist violence and its links that deny other rights and cause the feminization of poverty and social and political exclusion.
Can we continue living peacefully knowing that 8 out of every 10 women suffer some form of violence? The Santa Cruz Public Prosecutor's Office, in the previous administration, registered 6,654 reports of assaulted women; but the figure is alarming when the same offices report 1,302 sexual offenses, making Santa Cruz the department with the highest number of crimes of this nature.
In 2017, the country's public prosecutor's office reported more than 100 femicides. In our city, according to the information, 16 occurred, meaning that every month more than one woman is murdered by her partner or ex-partner. For our part, we recognize that these figures fall short of capturing a reality that, for various reasons, remains hidden.
We understand that our struggle is in the streets and requires the participation of all social and political actors. It is not enough to have a progressive and advanced legal framework without the necessary and adequate budgetary resources to implement the laws and public policies aimed at achieving gender equality.
I'm joining in, she, he, you all, we can all join in and transform pain into joy. Let's not allow any more violence and let's start the change by joining the campaign "I'm joining in, what about you?"
