GUARANI PEOPLE FOR THE PREVENTION OF VIOLENCE

A team from Casa de la Mujer traveled to remote areas of the Bolivian Chaco. The objective was to begin a training process for Community Promoters from the Guarani people who wish to contribute to the prevention of and guidance in cases of violence against women within their communities.
The constant rains have left behind a lush, green landscape, but also roads that are difficult to access, even for the local residents. Despite the obstacles along the way, it was possible to reach the communities of Caraparisito, Iviyeca, Tasete, Yapumbía, Buena Vista, and Yaiti, which are part of the Alto Parapeti Captaincy.
Miriam Suárez, director of the Women's Center, led the introductory workshops. The topics covered included ILO Convention 169, the International Labour Organization's Convention, which aims to overcome discriminatory practices affecting indigenous peoples and enable them to participate in decision-making processes that impact their lives.
An introduction to Law 348, which guarantees Bolivian women a life free from violence, was also presented. This was done so that Guarani women and men would be informed about the content of the law and know their rights.
This process, which began last year and will continue throughout 2018, is part of a consultancy commissioned by Total E&P Bolivie. The goal is for the future promoters to promote non-violence, respect for women, and support for victims of violence, coordinating with the Municipal Comprehensive Legal Service (SLIM) and the Lagunillas Office of the Ombudsman for Children and Adolescents.
